Another satisfying week has gone by! Time for my weekly blog entry? Hm~

While there hasn't been many new discoveries, many places are worthy of being revisited. No prize for guessing where we revisited yesterday, but rewinding back further to Tuesday, we went to the Botanic Gardens again, just to visit the succulent garden.

From 2009-08-21-2125-40

Funny how succulents can take the form of a rose, and then get given such a cute but inelegant name like... the Mexican Snowball. Wait... Does it even snow in Mexico??

And onward to food adventures:
From 2009-08-21-2125-40

This was at the malaysian restaurant in The Galleries Victoria, their Hainanese Chicken rice (unfortunately, not de-boned) and wanton noodle soup. Very average, and I promise myself I'll go crazy with these in Singapore- while paying half (or even less) of the price for a better taste.

We actually tried to go to Plan B- Becasse on Tuesday, but arrived at the place right on 3:45pm. Guess what? Kitchen closes at 3:30 =_= So that was dodgy, because the first time we went, we were too early and kitchen wasn't open yet. The lady working there was really sympathetic about it though, and we made a mental note to come back between 11:30am and 3:30pm the next day.

Which we did. =) Yay, we finally get our wagyu burger? =D Yes we did.

From 2009-08-21-2125-40

What came first was the tomato condiment for the sausage roll that we ordered because... well, last time we had it, it was just too good.

From 2009-08-21-2125-40

And it arrives. The Wagyu Beef burger, known to be the most blogged about burger in Sydney. Why three photos? Because we had to take three trips to this tiny little cafe in order to get our hands on it. And the second photo is blurry... can't be saved, but oh well, there's always other chances to take a better one next time right? =D I have to say, it is good, though I'm not really a big fan of burgers, so I wouldn't know what an outstanding burger will taste like. It's made out of wagyu beef- minced, but.... I wonder if one could really tell the difference between wagyu and non-wagyu meat when it's been minced. Don't all minced beef taste pretty much the same? Especially if you add spices to it? Maybe I'm just rambling on like some ignorant customer who does not know how to appreciate food, but what I do know how to appreciate... is their sausage roll.

From 2009-08-21-2125-40

Tada! So all sausage rolls don't look very much different and it actually looks like... hm... shall leave that to your imagination (the photo definitely does not do it justice), but the taste... it's quite worth the $7 that it cost. Eaten with the tomato paste given in a small teacup, it -has- to be the best sausage roll in Sydney.

And Friday was a revisitation of Balmain's Adriano Zumbo. It's so nice to go during a weekday morning because you know that the only people you have to beat in order to get his cakes and a seat in the small little cafe... are the Balmain locals. Had a little misfortune with buses because one failed to show up and we had to wait quite a long time, while our stomachs protested their hunger, and paranoia that the cakes are all going to disappear kicks in, but we ended up in Balmain at 10:30am or so. Enter pattiserie, and there was a queue already.

From 2009-08-21-2125-40

Cakes were disappearing fast. We saw this one last lonely round looking cake right in the middle and were thinking it's going to get bought before we got a chance to even see its description. No it didn't get sold, but we didn't get it anyway. Have to be nice to the customers after us, right? =)

From 2009-08-21-2125-40

One guy before us got eight of the chocolate tarts D= And you wonder why things sell out so quickly. Each customer bought about 5 items or so from the shop, and being such a tiny shop, it's no wonder that the store gets completely sold out in a matter of minutes.

From 2009-08-21-2125-40

According to a local, Adriano Zumbo has to make four trips from his workshop to his pattiserie each day. The time it takes for him to make each trip is not even fast enough for the cakes and pastries in the shop to stay on the display.

From 2009-08-21-2125-40

"He has no idea what was going to hit him when he went on Masterchef." We were talking to this really nice Italian lady at his cafe, and she was there the afternoon after Masterchef aired with him as a guest. Apparently, there were 3000 phone calls to his shops after Masterchef, requesting orders for the chocolate mousse cake. If you imagine one cake selling at $90, and selling 3000 of them.... wait, actually, imagine MAKING 3000 of those absurdly crazy difficult to make cakes! And if it takes 3 hours to make one... to make 3000... that's like.... o O!!
Oh, the photo. Right, there's some weird connotation to that strange name for a cake, but hm... the cake itself was absolutely great. Chocolate poprock ftw!

From 2009-08-21-2125-40

And this was our selection from his pattiserie shop =)

From 2009-08-21-2125-40

At about 10:45am, the cafe was busy, but not completely full yet, so we managed to get a seat inside. Its interior? A small, U-shaped sofa with a slab table, with a vase of tulips and magazines, local newspapers, menu, and a small little guestbook where adults and kids were free to doodle their comments and praises. A few "I love you Adriano Zumbo" and "your cakes are absolutely to die for, thank you" comments here and there.. ^^''

From 2009-08-21-2125-40

Their ceiling held a red chandelier that was quite unique. Nice touch.

This time, we were smart and didn't order drinks, because the hot chocolate is definitely rich and filling, so we ordered "The Younger Years" and "Miss Marple Deconstructed" again, because it was just too good not to. "The Younger Years" needed a waiting time of 20 minutes, I'm guessing the fondant needed some time in the oven to bake, so we know it'll be fresh out of the oven- warm and crisp on the outside, nice and gooey in the middle.... and we weren't disappointed. 20 minutes wait is NOTHING when you know THIS is coming:

*Eyes rolled towards heaven* It came in a kidney dish, with a syringe filled with raspberry sauce that was to be injected into the fondant. As the syringe is plunged into the cake, molten chocolate just oozes out like a volcano, mixing with raspberry sauce and overflowing down to the crushed peanut brittles. The peanut butter ice cream was just great, and when eaten together with the fondant along with the chewy peanut brittle bits, it's like... like... D= *loss for words*

In a blink of the eye, The Younger Years went by~
From 2009-08-21-2125-40

=(

If I were aiming to be a patissier, Adriano Zumbo would be a figure to admire and gain inspiration from.

That night, we headed to Kings Cross to try this well-rated Izakaya-style Japanese restaurant called "Juju". Most people will probably remember it if they went there, because they'd have to take off their shoes, place them in plastic bags and walk in barefooted or socked to sit on the cushions at the tables. Not seiza- though it would have been amusing to see people kneeling (or attempting to kneel), but there's room for feet under the table.

From 2009-08-21-2125-40

The stairs leading down to Juju. It serves a lot of alcohol and a lot of people go there for beer and sake, so thank goodness it's stairs leading down when you go in. No doubt many tipsy businessmen will break a couple of bones if those stairs led down while heading out.

From 2009-08-21-2125-40

Blurry menu- not my fault. My camera dislikes dim lightings with no flash.

From 2009-08-21-2125-40

Their Gyu Tataki. Nice stuff- it has this jelly on top, with shallots and rocket leaves at the side, served with a critus vinegar sauce.

From 2009-08-21-2125-40

Last piece... take it before the waiter does!

From 2009-08-21-2125-40

We ordered their cream croquette set meal...

From 2009-08-21-2125-40

Dimension-cut! Too bad, unlike Dotch cooking show, this cream croquette doesn't ooze cream out when cut.

From 2009-08-21-2125-40

Typical beef tepanyaki set meal.

From 2009-08-21-2125-40

And their cheese chicken on mash potato. I think people would actually go to Juju for the sake, and the entre, appetizers and house favourites, not for main meals. Their main meals were pretty mediocre, but the tataki and cheese chicken were quite good. Might not be worth revisiting, and there's the whole hassle with having to book (apparently essential when going to Juju's, it does get full pretty quickly) but if we were to go again... I think we'd order many small dishes rather than set, or mains.

There's also karaoke sessions after 10:30pm, so anyone up for being at Kings Cross at that time and wanting to show off some singing skills... there's Juju.

Today, being yet another Friday, L managed to get off her butt, stop playing PlantsVsZombies, and go... pig out at new places =)

But first! XD
From 2009-08-21-2125-40

My pet turtle from the zoo which we went to last Friday. =D

Today we decided to head over to Balmain to try some desserts, namely the pattisseries from Adriano Zumbo (which my sister and brother went to last time, but I had to go to work). It was a bit confusing at first because there are two shops by the same name- one being a cafe and the other being the pattiserie where you can buy chocolates and cakes. Tt found the pattiserie first, and we were directed to this tiny cafe that was quite hidden... and despite it being only about 11:30 or so, it was pretty full (which isn't hard for a tiny cafe like that) and I think we got the last available table.

From 2009-08-21-2125-40

This, their menu. Needless to say, we got their hot chocolate- a dark and a milk one, as well as a "Miss Marple Deconstructed" and a "PARIS- La Vie En Rose". Interesting names... those who read crime novels by Agatha Christie will be familiar with Miss Marple as the little old lady who goes around gossiping all the time while discovering clues to crimes.

From 2009-08-21-2125-40

Their hot chocolate. One word: Wonderful. I much prefer dark chocolate, which was quite bitter compared to other dark hot chocolates I've had, namely Max Brenner and Lindt. It wasn't thick at all, but the flavour was all there- rich, full, delicious =D Definitely a must-try for dark chocolate lovers. It got cold really quickly though, and forms this skin at the top, so it's probably a good idea to drink this down before it cools even a bit. Not that it would be any problem at all, since it's so good.

From 2009-08-21-2125-40

And our food arrives =D

From 2009-08-21-2125-40

Introducing "PARIS- La Vie En Rose" first. It's described in the menu as a "rose creme brulee, raspberry sorbet balls, fresh lychees and petit rose macarons with coconut strawberry tapioca shake." Let's see... the raspberry sorbet balls were awesome, and surprisingly enough, compliments the lychees and strawberries quite well. The creme brulee... ok, well, you can't really go wrong with creme brulees and all those I've had so far were great. This one was no exception. One could see the black spots of seeds from a vanilla pod... great stuff =D I must say though, macarons are really not my thing and while I acknowledge that it's quite hard to make, I don't find the taste and texture all that great... and the shake...

From 2009-08-21-2125-40

.. came in a flask with a straw. Strange combination... and tasted quite similar to sago ^^''

From 2009-08-21-2125-40

"Miss Marple Deconstructed"- described in the menu as "Maple mascarpone filled crepes with fresh strawberries and frozen orange jelly." I know Tt really really enjoyed this one, and I did too. It was *that* good. Where to begin... seriously, everything about this was good. The crepes were crispy at the surface, nicely browned and caramalized (probably with a blowtorch) and as you cut into the crepe, maple mascarpone just oozes out, mixing with the maple syrup that was drizzled on the plate. The frozen orange jelly was like orange sorbet- with some resistance as you bite into it. (I think I'm still thinking about that chewy ice cream, haha)

We weren't exactly full, and decided to walk around Balmain. By some deja vu and curiosity, we stepped into a small grocery store. It didn't look very special from the outside, but (don't call me crazy) I remember a shop almost exactly like that one in a dream I had many nights ago, even though I have never set eyes (or foot too!) into that shop ever. Divided into two sub-levels, it's called the Gourmet Grocer, selling T2 tea leaves in canisters, British candies and a section for ice cream, and... wait for it... Colefax Chocolates! =D

From 2009-08-21-2125-40

I wasn't sure if we were allowed to take photos or not, but the selection of chocolates from Colefax hidden unexpectedly in this small grocer was such a pleasant surprise, I couldn't help but sneak a shot.

From 2009-08-21-2125-40

The temptation was too hard to resist, so why resist at all, when all the harm it can do is... add a little fat and sugar to one's body? =D Had fun choosing out a box of 12 Colefax chocolates and left the store... only to open it up within a metre of the front door to dig in to these wonderful delights. Greedy? Yes we are, and we know it too =)

From 2009-08-21-2125-40

I can't really remember, but this had some sort of mousse inside... in the form of a rose. White chocolate and rose mousse I think it was? The guy was all cheerful and happy describing the chocolates, you could tell he loves chocolates too, haha.

From 2009-08-21-2125-40

The cupcake!

From 2009-08-21-2125-40

This was awesome. Seriously. Marshmallow and hazelnut praline in a chocolate cup. It was... I think one of the best chocolate.

From 2009-08-21-2125-40

Tt wanted to try their pure milk chocolate, which came in many different shapes, like an echidna, teddy bear, frogs, etc... he chose a teddy bear, not because it's cute, but because he wanted to be sadistic and do this:

From 2009-08-21-2125-40

=_= Poor thing.

That concludes our dessert hop. I think after indulging in all that chocolate and sugar, our energy got depleted pretty quickly, leaving us feeling lethargic, so we didn't end up going anywhere else. However, we do have a clear idea where to visit next... and what to order even. Take a guess:

From 2009-08-21-2125-40

204... where?

From 2009-08-21-2125-40

(Check out the wooden cutlery! XD Want to save the trees and not use plastic? Use degradable, wooden cutlery!)
This will be our next stop. 204 Clarence St, Plan B- Becasse. We actually visited this tiny cafe earlier today, before we even went to Balmain. Had a sausage roll- possibly the most expensive sausage roll you can get from Sydney, but also arguably the best. Smoked lamb with paprika sausage roll- home made, with chutney. We actually went there to try their famous Wagyu Beef burger, but it wasn't available till 11:30, so we decided to revisit it after going to Balmain. Which we didn't, but no big deal- because we'll try it soon enough =D

In just a little over a month...

I'll be in Singapore! =D

Impulse trip to visit grandpa/aunt and sister... and to eat of course! =)

Friday, August 14, 2009

Friday has been my day-off for a while. Even though technically I should really stop bumming around and work (or get around to applying for my masters course next year...), it feels great to get a day off, stop, relax, go to places and act like a tourist. Sometimes, when you've lived in a country for too long, you fail to see the attraction of the place... which is why exploring is so fun. Going to new places, trying new food, seeing new things, and not just treat Sydney like the hole that I initially thought it was.

So today, tt's day off too, so we went to.. the zoo!
From 2009-08-10-1115-24

It was actually quite random, even though we decided to go about a week ago. Shocking it may be, but I've never been to Taronga Zoo before. Ever. And I've never seen a koala (except once, when one climbed high up into a tree at Koala Park and I could see it from outside) and never a live kangaroo. Actually, we missed the kangaroo today, so I still haven't seen a live one... but I've seen many dead ones along the roads. The thing is, when we came to Australia, first thing we did was to look for a house, and second, to enrol into school, so we had no chance to explore Australia at all. What a sad kid right? =( Still, with the amount of exploring tt and I do, we pass off easily as tourists and everyone's exceptionally nice and patient when we ask tourist-like questions... such as "where's the closest bus stop to get to Auburn from Tarongo Zoo?" =P

Anyway! Zoo!!!

From 2009-08-10-1115-24

Near the entrance were the reptiles and amphibians... never a big fan of them, but I suppose some could be considered cute... or just plain weird.

From 2009-08-10-1115-24

What I do like are the turtles. Or tortoise. Wait, this one is... a tortoise? ._. Which ones are the ones with stumpy legs and which are the one with fins?? I forgot again, but anyway, this one seems a little desperate to get out...

From 2009-08-10-1115-24

Moving on to mammals... giraffes! They are seriously so elegant, with their slender legs and tall necks... supermodels of the animal kingdom?

From 2009-08-10-1115-24

Trick question: How many zebras are there in the photo?
(if you say two, look again =P or count the legs)

From 2009-08-10-1115-24

Goats. I don't know why, but goats always appear evil. It's their eyes... how it's slanted horizontally instead of vertically...

From 2009-08-10-1115-24

^^'' Open to interpretation. What do you think this is? =P

From 2009-08-10-1115-24

We arrived at the elephant area just at the end of their playtime and managed to see them spraying water... one particularly playful elephant sprayed its trainer/feeder and wrapped its trunk around his arm so he couldn't go, it was the cutest thing ever.

From 2009-08-10-1115-24

Usually, pelicans look evil. They have this fake, painted on eyes and sharp beak... but this one... this one... is actually quite cute. Its feathers are so kempt and pretty.

From 2009-08-10-1115-24

Though not as pretty as swans because swans have frilly feathers, I felt like petting this one... but its beak is quite scary =|

From 2009-08-10-1115-24

Penguins! This one is called a flying penguin =_= for obvious reason. It's tiny and literally flies through the water, it's so fast! Took forever trying to get a good shot of it, and I still failed. Tt took this one.

From 2009-08-10-1115-24

On to Latti's distant relative. This lion was sitting right in front of the window, as though he's showing off how majestic and cool he is. I wonder.. do lions eat cats....

From 2009-08-10-1115-24

THIS tiger. Poor lonely sumatran tiger, it was the only one there and it just wouldn't stop pacing. Whether it was just hungry, or doing it to annoy the people who are trying to take a good photo of him (me included), I don't know, but all my shots turned out blurry and this one was the best I could do after following its pacing from one end to the other a couple of dozen times.

From 2009-08-10-1115-24

These things... I forgot what they are ._. They look prickly in the photo, but I'm sure they're actually soft...

From 2009-08-10-1115-24

Cutest things ever. These are the red pandas- mother and son. If only they weren't so rare, wouldn't mind having one of these as a pet =P They look like racoons more than pandas. Oh hey... talking about pandas... we never saw any today... hm....

There were other animals, like the rhino, seals, lizards, birds, fish etc, but these are the main attractions and my camera is dodgy anyway, so I didn't actually take that many photos (maybe like a hundred? haha, but many were badly taken shots of... blurred animals).

Took a ferry back to circular quay and decided to do the most touristy thing one can ever do in Sydney- take a shot of the Opera House...

From 2009-08-10-1115-24

random buildings... and I took one of the bridge too, but shakey hands+ rocky motion from ferry= crappy photo.

It was around 2:30, 3pm by then, and, having completely missed breakfast and lunch, we bought some wedges from somewhere around the station to curb some of the hunger before taking a train to Auburn.

And why Auburn? =D

From 2009-08-10-1115-24

Look and be jealous! hahaha~

From 2009-08-10-1115-24

Mado- located on 64 Auburn Street (not too sure actually, but it's somewhere there), is a Turkish cafe, known for its "chewy ice cream". With salep and some other ingredient mixed into it, not only is it kind of chewy, it doesn't melt as quickly as normal ice cream. It was kind of surprising that we didn't get lost trying to find it, since it's the first time we got off at Auburn station and weren't familiar with that area. We passed by a lot of kebab shops and many others selling Turkish sweets and biscuits.... and managed to find Mado with no problem at all (thanks to my great sense of direction, if I may say so myself =P )

From 2009-08-10-1115-24

Interior is interesting, with... are those boots I see hanging on the wall?? o O various Turkish ceramic wares and tapestries on the other side.

From 2009-08-10-1115-24

We ordered a cup maras (but they ran out of some flavours, so I think the waitor recommended strawberry, raspberry, maras, pistachio and [insert unknown orange-coloured flavor here]), a kesme maras (chewy ice cream original flavor and eaten with a knife and fork), kazandibi- charred pudding with a sprinkle of cinnamon, and Turkish lemonade, which tasted almost exactly like ramune (the glass bottle with the marble that you pop? Yea, that one).

From 2009-08-10-1115-24

This... this kazandibi.. was amazing. Hard to describe, but it was kind of chewy too, and seriously, I could just keep eating this... and keep eating... the charred part (top) was obviously the best part =D

From 2009-08-10-1115-24

Kesme maras~ interesting texture for ice cream. Tt claims that if one bought an ice cream machine and made ice cream by adding glutinous rice flour to it (the main ingredient used to make mochi and rice cakes, the really chewy stuff), the end product will be a chewy ice cream. I'm highly skeptical about that idea, but if someone *cough tt* wants to try, be my guest and I hope you survive to tell me about it =)

From 2009-08-10-1115-24

From 2009-08-10-1115-24

It may look a little disgusting, but seriously, it's awesome. It's chewy ice cream, of course it's awesome!

We finished everything with no problem at all, because there's always room for dessert right? Even after eating dessert, there's always room for more. We looked around and found many people ordered this little cup of red... something, and being a little curious, we asked a waitress what it was and she said it's Turkish tea. No harm trying ^^

From 2009-08-10-1115-24

Turns out to be almost exactly like black tea... but look! A block of sugar! They're hardly around anymore- people just use those boring sticks of granulated sugar nowadays... Otherwise, there's nothing special about this tea, other than the cute cup it's in.

Now I can say I've tried chewy ice cream! =D And I've been to Taronga Zoo! Next stop... contemporary museum?
